Hypertension

Blood pressure is measured using 2 numbers:1

Systolic blood pressure

Measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats

Diastolic blood pressure

Measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats

If the measurement says 120 systolic and 80 for diastolic, we usually mention 120 out of 80. Regardless of your age, a normal blood pressure level should be kept below 120/80.

High or commonly called hypertension, on the other hand, is the one that is higher than normal. Constant measurements of your blood pressure over normal may result in a diagnosis of hypertension.

The higher your blood pressure levels are, the more at risk of developing other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attacks, or cardiovascular disease.

Your doctor may diagnose high blood pressure and make treatment decisions, reviewing your blood pressure levels and comparing them to levels set in national and international guidelines.

There are usually no signs or symptoms of alertness in hypertension, in fact, many people don’t know they have it. Making a constant measurement is the only way to know if you have high blood pressure.
